In Paris, the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, who had already built a reputation as one of the world’s preeminent painters, was inspired to create a large canvas (137.4 inches by 305,5 inches) called simply Guernica. Using a stark palette of gray, black, and white, it employed his trademark explosive “cubist” style to evoke the horror of the air raid. It created a sensation, which brought worldwide attention to the Spanish Civil War, along with condemnation of the barbarism of the role Germany had chosen to play in it.
